History of our Parish
On Sunday, February 4, 1979, Auxillary Bishop James S. Sullivan, Father John Fackler, John Klein, Maurice Olk and 380 parishioners celebrated the first Mass, thus establishing a MISSION CHURCH in Montrose. From among the three names submitted by parishioners, Bishop Kenneth Povish chose "Good Shepherd" as the name of our church on August 12, 1979. A fund drive in September 1979 planted the seed for Good Shepherd's church building. On July 27, 1980, the seed sprouted at the ground-breaking ceremony. The seed's bud appeared on Monday, May 4, 1981, when the dedication Liturgy for Good Shepherd was celebrated. Priests from St. Robert's of Flushing served the parish from 1979-1982. In 1983 Fr. Jim Bettendorf was appointed as part-time pastor. He was joined by Connie McClanahan, D.M. in 1984 who served as Pastoral Associate. In the fall of 1991, Sr. Josephine McNamara was installed as Pastoral Coordinator and served until July of 2009. Fr. Robert Kolenski served as Sacramental Minister on Sunday, and on Saturday, Fr. Gary McInnis of St. Luke's in Flint served as our Sacramental Minister until July of 2009. Presently Fr. Steve Anderson is serving as Parochial Administrator. With grateful hearts we are experiencing the seed's bud blooming into a beautiful flower as our parish community is nourished by God's Word and the faith of its members.
On October 2, 2007 was the ground breaking ceremony for our new Parish Life Center. This center will be used for religious education, funeral dinners, hall rentals, and various other functions to serve the community. On April 20, 2008 Bishop Carl Mengling was here for the dedication of our new Parish Life Center.
